| Brake / guard vans were equipped with a hand brake which could be applied by the guard, allowing brakes to be applied by both the locomotive and brake van simultaneously; this was essential to both the the slowing of freight trains before the invention of the continuous brake, and bringing the rear portion of the train to a halt in the event of a broken coupling.
